Who we are

Boston's music makers needed a stable place to work.
We built it.

The Record Co. builds Boston's creative workforce infrastructure. We provide professional creative space people can afford, training in the business of their craft, and a real path to earning a living, all under one roof, so that artists can build their careers here rather than leave Boston to build them somewhere else.

Somewhere along the way, we stopped being just a place to record. People started using us as a home base for everything they were building. Musicians, producers, podcasters, photographers, muralists, printers, and designers. We felt community and belonging here, and we saw possibility that had escaped a lot of us as creatives.

Learn

TRC Academy

Free, 12 weeks. Two weeks on the business of a creative career, then ten weeks in sound engineering, music production, or music business, taught by working professionals.

Work

960 Mass Ave

Twenty professional studios and rehearsal rooms at $10 to $40 an hour. No membership, no audition. Graduates can start earning here the week they finish.

Build

55 Morrissey

A monthly home for creative businesses in Dorchester. Room to try, fail, and try again, alongside 400+ others doing the same.

The model

We built
the work in.

Most workforce programs teach a skill and hope somebody else does the hiring. Our model doesn't run on that hope. The same affordable space that lets an artist practice is the space they can earn a living in, so nobody has to wait to be picked.

We run this like infrastructure, because that's what it is. People pay to use the studios and businesses pay rent at 55, and that goes right back into keeping everything affordable. We priced it for access from day one, and that's why it's still standing fifteen years later.

TRC Academy

Training that leads
to real work.

The Academy is built for ages 14 to 24, and it's open to the 55 Morrissey community too, because everyone who makes a living from creative work should understand the business and control their own career. You learn how to price your work, find paid work and keep it, and read a contract before you sign it.

In its first year, 100 people graduated. Every one of them left understanding the business and the craft better, and nearly nine in ten saw a real path to a career.

Our original home, fifteen years running. Twenty professional studios and rehearsal rooms, open every day from 10am to midnight. Walk in or book online, same rates either way.

Dorchester

55 Morrissey Blvd

We opened it in March 2023 in a former radio station, and it filled. Today 88 workspaces hold 400+ creative businesses, and a quarter of them hire or contract other creatives.

The Record Co. is a Boston nonprofit and the city's creative workforce infrastructure since 2010. We operate 108 professional recording studios, rehearsal rooms, and creative workspaces at 960 Mass Ave in Boston and 55 Morrissey Blvd in Dorchester, with studio rates from $10 to $40 an hour. TRC Academy offers free, 12-week training in sound engineering, music production, and music business. More than 3,000 people from 131 Greater Boston communities use our spaces every month.
